Eggental TourismusWażnym celem wycieczek w Monte San Pietro jest klasztor Maria Weißenstein, który jest jednym z najbardziej znanych miejsc pielgrzymkowych w Południowym Tyrolu. Barokowy kościół pochodzi z XVII wieku i znajduje się na wzgórzu niedaleko wioski. W pogodny dzień można stąd podziwiać wspaniałą panoramę rozciągającą się od Dolomitów po grupę Ortler.
Według legendy założycielskiej, pierwsza świątynia została zbudowana tutaj po tym, jak Dziewica Maryja ukazała się choremu rolnikowi Leonhardowi Weißensteinerowi w 1553 roku i uzdrowiła go. Najpierw zbudował on prosty mały kościółek - tak zwaną pierwotną kaplicę, która następnie przyciągała wiernych i pielgrzymów ze wszystkich stron. Ponad 100 lat później zbudowano większy kościół.
Wśród najsłynniejszych odwiedzających Maria Weißenstein w pobliżu górskiej wioski Monte San Pietro do dziś są papież Jan Paweł I, który spędził tu letnie wakacje jako kardynał, oraz papież Jan Paweł II, który odwiedził klasztor w 1988 roku.
