Eggental TourismusWażnym celem wycieczek w Monte San Pietro jest klasztor Maria Weißenstein, który zalicza się do najbardziej znanych miejsc pielgrzymkowych w Południowym Tyrolu. Barokowy kościół pochodzi z XVII wieku i znajduje się na wzgórzu niedaleko wsi. W pogodne dni można tu podziwiać wspaniałą panoramę, rozciągającą się od Dolomitów aż po grupę Ortler.
Zgodnie z legendą założycielską pierwsze sanktuarium powstało tutaj po tym, jak w 1553 roku Matka Boża ukazała się choremu rolnikowi Leonhardowi Weißensteinerowi i uzdrowiła go. Najpierw wzniósł on prostą kapliczkę – tzw. kaplicę pierwotną, która zaczęła przyciągać wiernych i pielgrzymów ze wszystkich stron świata. Ponad 100 lat później zbudowano większy kościół.
Do najsłynniejszych gości Maria Weißenstein w górskiej wiosce Monte San Pietro należą do dziś papież Jan Paweł I, który jako kardynał spędzał tu letnie wakacje, a także papież Jan Paweł II, który odwiedził klasztor w 1988 roku.
