Państwowe Muzeum Górnictwa w kopalni Schneeberg
Rudę wydobywano w Schneeberg przez wieki. Miejsce, w którym znajduje się Państwowe Muzeum Górnictwa z wioską górniczą St. Martin, jest wartym odwiedzenia celem wędrówki.
Teren Schneeberg znajduje się na wysokości 2 355 m n.p.m. i można do niego dotrzeć wyłącznie pieszo: z Timmelsjochstraße w Val Passiria w około 2 godziny, a z Ridanna/Maiern w około 4 godziny. Oferuje to wspaniałe widoki na górski świat i ekscytujący wgląd w długą górniczą historię regionu.
Historia
Najwcześniejsza pisemna wzmianka o wydobyciu rudy na Schneeberg pochodzi z 1237 roku: marginalna notatka odnotowuje, że za miecze płacono "dobrym srebrem z Schneeberg". Tyrolskie górnictwo osiągnęło swój szczyt około 1500 roku: mówi się, że w tym czasie 1000 górników wydobywało srebrną galenę w 70 tunelach na Schneeberg. Jednak blenda cynkowa, główna ruda, mogła być wydobywana i wykorzystywana dopiero od XIX wieku.
Najwyżej położona stała osada w Europie
Od 1870 r. górnicza wioska St. Martin rozrosła się w dużą osadę z gospodą, kościołem, szpitalem i szkołą podstawową. W 1967 r. pracownicy zostali przeniesieni do Maiern w dolinie Ridanna i aż do ostatecznego zamknięcia kopalni w 1985 r. złoża rudy były dostępne od strony Ridanna przez sztolnię Poschhaus. W Ridannie znajduje się również Wojewódzkie Muzeum Górnictwa.
Masyw górski ukształtowany przez górnictwo
Z górniczej wioski St. Martin zachowało się kilka budynków mieszkalnych i fabrycznych, z których jeden mieści stałą wystawę poświęconą historii zagłębia górniczego. Ścieżki edukacyjne prowadzą do zasypanych wylotów sztolni i obok ciężkiego sprzętu, który pozostał na miejscu po zakończeniu działalności górniczej. Wycieczki z przewodnikiem oferowane są nad i pod ziemią, dając odwiedzającym bardziej intensywne doświadczenie dawnego okręgu górniczego Schneeberg.
